Where to you see yourself living these next five years?
Do you anticipate any changes in the U.S. ... in the world during that time? (Any changes ... from Global Warming to Global Recession.)
Are you planning any life changes ... career ... marriage, divorce ... breakup ...

Well, good Gawd that's a big ol' question......!!!
I'm curious now why you wanna know that from complete strangers.......
Looking to set up a buisness where the majority seems to be headed, perhaps.......?? smile
I'm sorry... I kid.., I'm kidding.
Couldn't tell u honestly where i'll be 5 hours from now.
Well...., i could.., but who knows if i'd be right......
Okay..., now i'm just rambling.....
Interesting question, tho... Hope somebody less type-phobic than I answers............

I'm just curious to hear if others are actively PLANNING their life. I'm in the last stages of moving out of Oakland, California for good. The quality of life in California is a mere shadow of what it used to be. The "powers that be" seem to be draining all the money out of it. (But I digress...)
If my information is correct, China and India are already the 1 & 2 largest economies in the world. That means America is now Number 3. With the Sub Prime Mortgage debacle, it really does look like yet another recession is coming. (And we know who gets hurt the worst during a recession...) Stands to reason that with recession, crime will go up ... and if a Global Recession gets triggered ... then crime really will rise. Increased crime means a lowered quality of life and an increase in police sponsored fascism.
In short ... I'm getting da hell outta dodge. Just how many tea leaves does one need to read???
But I'm shocked at how stubborn and unimaginative black people have become! Flood waters can be soaking our ankles, and somehow ... I don't know if it's denial or despair ... but WE WON'T MOVE!
Some brothers in Oakland say that they refuse to move because they can see how the economic racism is trying to push them out so that whites can return to the inner city. True ... but ... becoming homeless ain't going to stop it. Plus ... as the old saying goes ... "God might have a better plan for you."
I've changed careers (who KNEW I'd ever be a truck driver???) and now I'm based out of Oklahoma. (I NEVER, EVER thought I'd be living in Oklahoma!) But there are historically black townships ... some now integrated ... there. Kansas and Northern Missouri ... some spots in Arkansas (believe it or not) ... all have inexpensive land and homes. Time to make a new plan.
My question is ... do you feel secure about the future of your life where ever you are ... or do you feel the changes going on too? If so, I'm just curious about what how others are making life changes.

I would like to be cancer free in 5 years. I would like to see America make a dent on the huge homeless population on this country. I would liek to see blacks give a damn about each other. We make up 51% of the homeless population in this nation and we are doing little or nothing to change this.
If the my God says the same I will still be here in Santa Monica.

Honestly... i gotta tell u.. I actually somewhat try NOT to think about the big picture as far as where this country maybe headed...
I dont know that i REALLY have enough DEFINITE factual info about the future of the economy, crime projections, or urban development to make an educated enough guess to seriously factor in such large aspects into the planning about my single personal life....
Sure i can assume from my own personal anecdotal observations..., but u can project doom and gloom at just about ANY point in time that i have been alive....
I certainly don't see anyone or any group in upcoming political power trying to actually steer things in a truly progressive direction..., and it does only seem like there is even worse and more inter connectedly dysfunctional financial situations to come..., but i fail to see how moving to India or China would possibly help any American who moved there (if thats what you were suggesting Fred...i'm not sure...).., and in any case what about wanting to live where u consider to be HOME...??
I do for the first time - due to VERY similar reasons that u listed, Fred - see myself possibly moving out of NYC for the first time in just about my entire life ( i spent 6 months in San Fran after high school)..., especially if this city elects ANOTHER soulless, billionaire, strictly number crunching mayor, with development dollar signs where his eyes and mind should be.....
But much moreso for myself.., as opposed to due to the state that i project this country will be in....
For myself..., i'm thinking alot more singularly and small in scale..... I plan to start school beginning of next year, get my degree in under 3.., and have an ideal job ASAP after........
I leave my bigger personal plans to have alot of 'wiggle room'.., as one thing my life has taught me is often to value the journey as much or even more than the ultimate destination.... All lessons learned along the way - even those that come along on the roads we never planned to travel - are VERY important.
It takes someone truly open to the universe to, while following a wanted game plan, realize that 'the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry'.....
-
Kengi ... frat ... why the fatalism? Like the saying goes ... "He who does not engineer his destiny will have his destiny engineered for him." But I'm glad to read that you're putting your faith in God while you make those plans.
Five years is really quick. it's actually a "short term goal." If we were rich, we'd be making plans for our family throughout the next 300 years.
May i be so bold as to add that ... well ... my brother ... I just spent the last 19 years of my life working in the social service trenches. Man ... it's too late ... you can't help those who are hell bent on ... hell. It's gotten too deep. I was told when I first entered the quagmire of non-profits to focus on just the few you can help. I paid no attention. Wish I had.
A brother who teaches at Berkeley High told me that we loose too many good kids now days because we put too much time and money on the bad ones.
It's late ... save yourself first. Do some really deep thinking about your highest dreams ... then start walking towards them. Save one good brother. -

It's time for LIFEBOAT RULES. That means we throw overboard anyone in the lifeboat who isn't capable of contributing to our group survival. It's like a Luxury Oceanliner has gone down. In the lifeboat are 6 linebackers from a college football team, three lumberjacks, two able bodied seamen, and 5 members of the String Section of the Orchestra of the National Ballet and the Impersario of the Ballet. We are 1200 miles from shore in the open ocean. There are sufficient provisions for everyone for 5 days (17 x 5 = 85 man days of supplies). If we reduce the people in the boat by the 6 (musicians and impersario) the remaining 11 have supplies to last into a third day longer than the larger company. The 11 strong able bodied men may be able to row the boat 150 miles each day; particularly with the lighter load. To attempt to save all of them requires that the same strong backs have to make 240 miles a day with a heavier load. All die or some must be sacrificed.
We are rapidly approaching that sort of crisis. We are not at sea and in this crisis intellectual "muscle", education, and socialization (expressed as a willingness to be a part of a community) are the survival traits. Gang bangers, drug dealers, hoochies, pimps, and all the other parasitical denizens of the Bling subculture need not apply. They made choices that invalidate them from the selection of survivors; so its going to soon be time to tell them adios. -
-
What a disgustingly poor analogy, as far as equating mere physical brawn with worthiness to continue to exist....
I guess i know hwat u were TRYING to elucidate when u later clarify about 'intelliectual' muscle....
But seriously....even as a illustrative joke, that hits more sore spots than needed in 'getting the point' across.....in my opinion....

in 5 years there won't be a planet, now let's just deal with the present, and what you do for yourself and the world you impact on.for myself i have a difficult time dealing with the people who are already here so why feel the need to replicate more annoying people.we are now at the tipping scale of life on this planet as far as i see it.
-
-
Brother Jombi ... when you write that you have difficulty dealing with the people who are already here in the planet ... ThAt'S the point!
Questions: What's in the way of your heart connecting with "others"?
I ain't new to this planet either. I'm a recovering alcoholic and addict that's been clean and sober for over 23 years. I've used sex and rage and blame and everything else I could find to distance myself from my shame and despair. Eventually everything ... all my false gods ... lost their usefulness. The false foundations they stood on became quicksand.
Point the finger one way and inevitably, there are three pointing back. In the end, it's all me. I am the engineer of the quality of my life. I am the one that does the spiritual work that allows me to separate the voices of my true self from the voices of my demons speaking to me.
I am the one that makes the choices that give rise to my karma ... and no ... no one escapes karma. If you have an open and loving heart and your path has been to love outside the box, it is NOT up to me to put any label of right or wrong on that. (It may not even be the issue.)
It's the CHALLENGE of maturing my heart ... my spiritual love ...my mental health... and the outcome of my life DESPITE all this garbage we as black people have to swim through. I refuse to be a victim. I BELIEVE that when God closes one door, at LEAST one more betta one is open. Again ... the words of Henry J. Kaiser ... "Every problem is an opportunity in work clothes."
When I used to work with active drunks and addicts, I was taught to listen for two words ... "Yeah but..."
When you tell a person they can have a wonderful life if they just put down the pipe or that bottle ... and they tell you: "Yeah but my mama don't love me and my daddy got drunk" ... what they're really telling you is that they ain't ready to change because deep down, they LIKE what they're doing.
That's what I'm wrestling with as I (and it sounds like you too) look at this cosmic ass-whipping headed our way.... yet ... we refuse to change. Amazing.
Please forgive my tone. I just feel strongly about this. I do not want to sound like I'm fighting with you my brother. As The Word says ... "We fight now with flesh, but against principalities...." -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.Unsu...
LOL
U crack me up. -

Thats the problem with black people now. We are too busy caring for OURSELF that we have moved away from caring for and taking care of each other.
What are YOU doing to bring change on this planet? Or are you too damn busy looking out for youself? You sound like a Pastor. "Get all you can. Can all you get. The sit on the pot and poison the rest."

Po "Saint" ... as you can see I didn't even mention you in my initial reply. But you seem to deeply desire acknowledgement… so here it is:
Brother ... I'm sure that you read it wrong ... or I wrote it wrong ... but word up ... physical brawn IS going to keep a whole LOT of brothers and sisters eating in the upcoming months and years. But you do not have to be a muscle man to learn a trade ... to sell the work of honest hands and brain ... and the blessed feeling of a sweaty hard day's labor ... for cash. It's the basic roots of American business.
Who, pray tell, do you think grows, picks, packages and ships the meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables that you delicately purchase at the supermarket?? Men and women of various hues, shapes and classes who WORK and use their physical labor to make a living.
TOUGH times are coming. I predict that a WHOLE LOT of folks who thought they were brilliant are going to miss more than a few meals. (How old were you during the early 80’s when Reganomics kick our collective black behinds?)
Word Up ... they messing with the food supply. Genetically Alerted crops. Hormones and antibiotics in the meat. Ever smell the "farms" where they "grow" those KFC chickens? The Animal Rights folks are even screaming the alarm over what FOSTER FARMS is doing to those ... "chickens."
I looked at some of your pictures. No, it doesn't matter that you're gay. If it wasn't for people like Baynard Rustin, the Civil Rights Movement might have never reach the levels of success that it did. (We also have a loooong history of "Chicken and a Biscuit" kinda "Colored Folks" who like to get theirs 'round at the back door.)
All I'm saying is that 'yall betta wake up. That old game of “Go to college and get a good job” is over. “I got MINE” is over. You can try to be good BUPPIES and GUPPIES all you want to ... but the day that "proving" you're a "Good" black guy (a.k.a. "A black-white man) is waaay over. You ... like everyone else is now left with the existential dilemma of creating your own self-actualization for yourself.
The black dollar has been written off in California and many other states. No point in blaming the "illegals." We're the ones who let our game get weak. It's a new day baby, and that new day is one of the most GOLDEN of opportunities we as a people have ever seen.
They ain't carrying us and they ain't stopping us. Rome is falling and they're going to need every new (legal) dish that's brought to the table. Can you build a housing development? Can you manufacture the "Next Big Thing"? Can you roll up your sleeves and get as sweaty and dirty as the men and women who built this thing? (White Men and Black Men and Mexican Men and Yellow Men???)
When I see you in that picture with that white man holding you in his arms and you labeling the photo as: "The One That Got Away" ... I have to sigh. It's nothing wrong with loving whomever you want ... but WHEN are we going to start loving ourselves and EACH OTHER enough to cooperate together NO MATTER WHAT?
Do not even make me start discussing what is and what is not ... "Disgusting."
Although I will say that if you see “discusting” in my posts urging self-determination and collective cooperation ... well ... you bring up what I learned during all my years of working in Mental Health and Social Services ... in short ... "whatever you see in me, you see in yourself."
-
All respect Stefan, but I don't think you got the full intent of my thesis. I said, "intellectual "muscle", education, and socialization (expressed as a willingness to be a part of a community) are the survival traits." In that mix I believe that loyalty and commitment to a community are the trump cards or dominant traits. And if I offended you by the poverty of my analoy, I regret that. However; when it becomes time for us to make decisions about our survival as a people, I will vote for you and not some misanthrope whose only contribution to our people is 4 children he doesn't support, or a thug who robs the elderly.
As far as equating mere physical brawn with worthiness to exist. How would you decide who got to stay in the Lifeboat? Would you kill everybody in order to feel morally superior? It isn't much discussed, and doesn't much happen in this time of Satellite phones and GPS, but during the past often decisions like that had to be made.

www.english.ufl.edu/imagetex..._1/saxey/
besides that, i'd like to have learned spanish w/ my daughter. she's 2 months old now & it's a goal for me to get us both conversant before she starts kindergarten. my german isn't shabby, but it could use some attention too.
the rest of the world will always have problems. i doubt too much will really change in that regard though. there will be poor people & rich, smart people & ignorant...there have been for thousands of years & probably will continue to be so...
